Default Where is "The Spider"?

I've heard all sorts of radio drama's now, OTR and modern. After reading here I've heard of many things I've enjoyed .. but one thing.. that I've heard of and have never seen is any audio of "the Spider".

He has been described to me as a "low rent" version of "The Shadow", and in a recent interview it was described that each adventure (novels) were more apocalyptic than the one before. I'd be surprised if this REALLY never made it to Radio, and I'm curious as to why no one has seemed to do it now.. Perhaps its still under copyright?

AFAIK the Spider never made it to radio, though he did make it into a serial cliffhanger. (See the bottom of this page for more on that.) You can read a couple of the novels for free -- legally -- at the Fifth Imperium.

Back when Blackmask Online was still around, they had the first five novels. Things hadn't gotten quite as over-the-top then, and the inspiration from other characters of the same era is obvious, but a "low rent version of the Shadow" isn't the phrase I'd use.

There used to be a Blackmask DVD available for purchase that included all the site content, which also had all the Doc Savage and Shadow novels. Feel free to guess why the website is long down.

I agree that The Spider never made it to radio but I think you can buy some nice Pulp reproductions on RadioSpirits.com.

I just started reading "The Spider Strikes". I don't know how the reviewer I read described him as a "low rent Shadow"? Its LOTS of fun!

Hello:
I am also surprised that the "Spider" was cast in that light. This hero ruled the pulps for many years and recently many of those stories have been reprinted. I picked up a book a couple weeks ago about The master of men: The "Spider." It was published by Baen Books and is over 350 pages of pure Spider action. It contains three tales; "Satan's Murder Machines," "Death Reign of the Vampire King," and "The Octopus." It was printed in 2007 and has a terrific Jim Steranko cover.
Hope this helps.
Have a Great Day!!!

I've got a "Spider" novel as well, and although he was created as competition to The Shadow, I don't see any poor quality in the writing. In fact, the preface of the novel even describes how one of his stories was plagerized for a Super-Man story... and how he settled out of court and the settlement paid way more than he originally made selling the book in the first place.

I think The Spider would make a great AD, even thoughts of doing it myself someday... whenever I get around to finishing current projects and beginning other ones that are more developed!
