Like most of those where I live in the US, Canada wasn't a place that was really relevent to me. It was a large, polite country that liked hockey, gave us You Can't Do That On Televison and sat on top of us like a big hat. Since listening to DRT, I've learned alot. Facts, geography, culture...the Canadian Tourism department should be proud of the work ya'll do. Here's some of what I've learned from DRT so far... The only people that drive in Toronto are Clarissa and bus drivers. Casa Loma? Real! Queen Street? Real! We need a DRT walking tour guide. Shakespeare. Lots and lots of Shakespeare. An unhealthy affair with Shakespeare. Shakespeare is to Toronto as Elvis is to Memphis. Toronto is a union town. I will never get a DRT sports reference. They say that people in Canada have an accent, but I've never heard one. They're highly educated. They like to drink. Tim Horton's is a doughnut hole place and makes fine currency. You can learn a little French by listening. You'll get the meaning but have no idea how to spell it. Le mon ju is incorrect and will bring up lemon juju when you google it. In both the north and the south, gravy on fries is a good thing. I have a feeling that I'll be getting a lesson on Canada's role in WWII very soon. I really, REALLY want to visit Toronto. Did I mention the Shakespeare? What have YOU learned from DRT? | | | | 08-21-2010 | #2 | | Audiofile Janice is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 1,299 | I've learned from the message boards that people think we're cool. Oh, you should come visit sometime. Undrave came by last year, but I had just sprained my ankle and we couldn't do the walking tour thing. I promise not to let that happen again. Queen Street asylum, Bathurst Street, warehouses on Dupont, Union Station, the Royal York. I could swear there's a picture in the Royal York lobby of Harry Kelly's baseball team. Come when Urban Bard is having a show. Then you'll see some cool Shakespeare. We could go visit Minac's chocolates, too. | | | 08-21-2010 | #3 | | Electric Eel, et.al ScottyMoyle is offline Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Toronto Posts: 140 | From DRT, I have learned: -Bourbon before noon is okay as long as it's in a Batman sippy cup -Going vegetarian is a sure-fire recipe for ridicule, even when it's discovered that "Scotty's girl pizza tastes alright!" -when the script says (low murmurs of surprise), you don't go 'hrmmrmrmmmlllrrmrmmhm' into the mic. Gregg adds that in post. | | | 08-21-2010 | #4 | | Raconteur JabberBjorn is offline Join Date: Oct 2009 Location: Washington, DC area Posts: 56 | I enjoy the Crown's attorneys. In theory, I knew Canada had them, but for whatever reason, they didn't come up in what Canadian TV I've seen. | | | 08-21-2010 | #5 | | Audiofile Undrave is offline Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Quebec, Canada Posts: 1,303 | When I went to Casa Loma I learned that, after the labs in London were bombed by the Luftwaffe they moved their secret Radar/Sonar experiements in the stables of Casa Loma! It was already a tourist attraction back then and the only thing keeping people from the super secret war-changing technology was a five dollars padlock and a signed saying something along the line that repairs were being made and 'we appologize for the inconvinience'. All that went on to the total ignorance of the provincial government as the Allies Command went directly to the city autorithy to arrange the stay! Amazing stuff. | | | 08-21-2010 | #6 | | Waiting for BJJ and TRP. pbsbelle is offline Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: West Memphis, Arkansas Posts: 389 | | Quote: | | | | | -Going vegetarian is a sure-fire recipe for ridicule, | | | | | You've gone vegetarian? But, that means at some point you've had bacon and have now turned your back on it. How can you deny BACON? I blame Shakespeare. You must have overdosed on it somewhere along the way. Kidding aside, when we DO plan a Toronto vacation, we'll do it during Urban Bard season. It would be nice to see a show. And when we come, I'll bring Memphis BBQ sauce. Maybe there's still time for an intervention. Janice- I'm up for a tour and will never turn down chocolate. | | | 08-21-2010 | #7 | | Audiofile Janice is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 1,299 | | Quote: | | | | | . . . a five dollars padlock and a signed saying something along the line that repairs were being made and 'we appologize for the inconvinience'. . . | | | | | The best disguise is one that lets you hide in plain sight. | Quote: | | | | | Janice- I'm up for a tour and will never turn down chocolate. | | | | | I went vegetarian years ago, but I'll make sure you get ample meat served. And chocolate. | | | 08-21-2010 | #8 | | Waiting for BJJ and TRP. pbsbelle is offline Join Date: Jan 2009 Location: West Memphis, Arkansas Posts: 389 | Things I've learned from DRT...continued There is a shortage of good meat, forcing what seems to be sane people to turn their back on bacon and the smoky love you can only get from BBQ. Janice - as I am a carnivore, we'll balance each other out. | | | 08-21-2010 | #9 | | Audiofile Undrave is offline Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Quebec, Canada Posts: 1,303 | I remember spotting a Baton Rouge restaurant near the CN Tower but as I was alone I didn't feel like going... there was also a Cora Breakfeast in the same general area... that I should have gone to. Both are good restaurant chains with decent price. The portions at Baton Rouge are so American -sized just the coleslaw is pilled up five inches tall XD If you go for a visit I cannot recommand the City Pass enough: http://www.citypass.com/toronto?mv_s...FVVx5QodjSIZww GREAT deal! I originally wanted to go to the ROM, Casa Loma and the Zoo and this gave them to me for cheaper than all three entrace AND I got the CN Tower as a bonus! The TTC weekly pass was also a nice deal to get around the city (no need to worry about traffic!). The ride to the zoo can be a little long so bring a book or some DRT episodes | | | 08-21-2010 | #10 | | Krale krale is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Boyne City, MI Posts: 662 | | Quote: | | | | | .
