I think the college dialogue was made to reflect how stupid they were. Call it a clash of worlds. You've got the Knuckledusters on one side of his life and the exotic untouchable on the other.
What's got me a little confused was the ending. Did the vial break or did she take it? Because if she took it she's either cured or dead, in which case they still can't be together.
According to the original short story, that's exactly what happened. Frankenstein without the revenge.
