I haven't seen a dedicated thread to this, so since people come occasionally asking "what's good for...blahblahblah" I thought all us audio producer folks could share what we use here! So, I currently run the following: -REAPER 3.1x DAW. Really low CPU usage and easy to figure out out to use! Best of all it's FREE to download from reaperaudio.com (but if you decide to keep using it, they ask for you to pay for it, which is a nominal $60!). Great bang for the buck here. -TASCAM US-1641 recording interface. I also record music so if you're into that, this unit is fantastic! 8 mic-pres, 6 line ins, USB connection. I've run pretty much every input at the same time and have rarely had an issue. There's the new US-2000 out there, but it's just a dressed up version of this, so I'd say save 200 bucks and buy the 1641 if it's something you could use. -Computer... just a standard HP dv9000 series laptop from costco. Now although I've been able to push this thing pretty far mixing in reaper, it does have some hangups... but again, for audio drama I don't have issues at all. -MICS: 2 sm57s, 2 PG57s, 2 samson co2 condensers, 2 t.Bone RM700 ribbons. The ribbons are very similar to cascade ribbons, and sound really nice on horns and vocals! Well, that's the best of it... I am in the market for some new monitors (still just using standard computer speakers from bestbuy... but if I can make a mix sound good on these, 99% of listeners these days listen on the same or even less quality things anyhow... so I'm not too worried. What does everyone else have, and why do you enjoy using it? | | | | 02-18-2010 | #2 | | 1-Woman Butt-Kicking Army JulieH is online now Join Date: May 2008 Posts: 3,518 | You'll laugh. Laptop. Audacity. Tascam for two mikes in, Podcast factory for one mike. Super basic directional mikes. Piles of enthusiasm. That's about it. __________________ --Julie Hoverson 19 Nocturne Boulevard ...and the Deadeye Kid ......and Fatal Girl .........and Tone Didactic ............and Bingo the Birthday Clown | | | 02-19-2010 | #3 | | Administrator hudson is online now Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Nr Cambridge, UK Posts: 740 | Mine's a Samson C01U, Standard Latop and Reaper for mixing. | | | 02-19-2010 | #4 | | Moderator Jack J Ward is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia Posts: 1,916 | We use a Digi-rack -002 with a dedicated computer and three Nova class A FET M-Audio microphones. We rented an omni-directional ribbon mic for the Any Man voice overs, and might end up buying one down the line for a different recording sound. My next apartment I'm going to set up a studio room and have it as quiet as humanly possible. We use Pro Tools 7 for the recording and most of the editing. Exporting to Adobe Audition for compression and Goldwave for some vocal effects only to reimport back into Pro Tools. I'd die to be able to do all the things in Pro Tools and save myself the steps. We're looking into some options on that with John Kyle for Prairie Fire. LOL Like Julie I use audacity to line up vocals and sfx and music and level stuff <love the simplicity of this program!> and to record in. I use goldwave to pan, eq, and do vocal sfx and clean up lines,. I use Adobe Audition 1 for room tone/echo- some vocal sfx-and some other odd filter sfx as well as spreading the audio on some ambiance <forest sounds/wind and the like to leave the middle open for vocals>. I have an XLI soundcard that allows me to plug my mic in <one from my wife's band> or my guitar. And a whole lotta blood sweat and tears. Once done, they're all piled into Reaper for lining up, room effects, music, SFX panning, volume etc. | | | 02-19-2010 | #7 | | Barbarian in need of Ale Bill Hollweg is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Texas Posts: 11,058 | I Dl-d reaper but have yet to try it. I need to before it expires...sighs...so many cool editing programs and so few hands... | | | 02-19-2010 | #8 | | Administrator hudson is online now Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Nr Cambridge, UK Posts: 740 | I used Audacity to mix my first show but soon wanted something that could deal with the multi tracks better and trim, move and add FX without changing the original source material. (Audacity may have moved on since then of course). Reaper was quite cheap, easy to learn and is much more stable than I found Audacity to be. | | | 02-19-2010 | #9 | | Prof. Ozwalds Sonic Lab TheMusicMan76 is offline Join Date: Nov 2009 Location: Vancouver, BC Posts: 29 | Bill, Reaper will continue to work after the 30 days.... it doesn't cripple the software at all... but your moral obligation to the creators of the software may suffer a bit... | | | 02-19-2010 | #10 | | Barbarian in need of Ale Bill Hollweg is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Texas Posts: 11,058 | Oh really?
