This is not exactly DRT related, but it is a question that I think this crowd here can help with. So, since I gave the dh the first season of Disney's Zorro TV show for Christmas, the two of us have been thinking a lot about mystery men, specifically, heroes with a secret identity. The earliest example we can discover is the Scarlet Pimpernel, followed closely by Zorro and the Lone Ranger. Do you know anyone earlier? Thanks! __________________ | | | 01-10-2010 | #2 | | Audiofile Janice is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 1,299 | Ooh, this is a fun question. Would the Green Knight of Arthurian legends count? No one knew who he was. | | | 01-10-2010 | #5 | | Audiofile franollie is offline Join Date: Jun 2009 Location: Philadelphia-ish Posts: 192 | We thought about Robin Hood, but he wasn't able to be Robin Locksley by day and Robin Hood by night, if you know what I mean...Though all the other parts are good--the merry men as agents! LOL! Is the Green Knight a hero, anti-hero or villian? My Arthurian knowledge is not so good (hangs head in shame). __________________ | | | 01-10-2010 | #6 | | Audiofile Undrave is offline Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Quebec, Canada Posts: 1,303 | Its hard to say what kind of role the Green Knight embodies...he's mostly there to give a lesson. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_Knight "His major role in Arthurian literature includes being a judge and tester of knights, and as such the other characters see him as friendly but terrifying and somewhat mysterious." Lesley Livingston could probably answer us on that one. | | | 01-10-2010 | #7 | | Audiofile franollie is offline Join Date: Jun 2009 Location: Philadelphia-ish Posts: 192 | So, the Green Knight is like Yoda? (I have good Star Wars knowledge). __________________ | | | 01-10-2010 | #8 | | Audiofile Undrave is offline Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Quebec, Canada Posts: 1,303 | Well he is green... XD All sign points to the Scarlet Pimpernel being the original...there doesn't seem to be anyone before him...considering he even plays the part of the foppish dandy to deflect any suspiscion its obvious he was important in the creation of modern masked mystery men. The Count of Monte Cristo! __________________ "Caution! These comments are based on my honest opinions, and could cause apoplexy in others. He's even got a few of the more random tropes- knowledge of ancient oriental secrets, master of disguise, vendetta against those who have wronged him... The ending still ticks me off, though. | | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | | All times are GMT -5.
