Question A production query

I am in development of a couple projects and I had this question come to mind and I thought I would pose it to the collective mind.

How do you prefer to receive lines from your cast? I mean those actors that are not present. Do you prefer one file per line? All lines in one file? How many takes is preferred? What is it that you guys like to do with those lines?

My preferences:

Small parts: All lines in one file, three takes each, seperated by about five seconds (between lines, not between takes on the same line)

Parts with more than one scene - one file per scene.

I prefer mono, rather than stereo, since all I do the minute I get it is turn it into mono anyway. I prefer to do noise removal myself.

I'm curious to see what everyone else says too - good topic!!!!

Mine is everything for a specific character in one file. That way I can clean it all up and break it up as I need to once the mixing begins- but it's really a personal preferance. Some like every line to be seperate which would give me nightmares-LOL

I have every line in the production numbered and have the actor submit a separate file for each line with the file name the number of the line and the character name. I also have the actors do 3 takes for each line.

When mixing I just grab all the relevant lines (say 32-64) from the various character directories for that episode and then proceed to clean them and do what needs to be done. I find this system makes assembly really easy since Adobe Audition just lines up all the lines in a scene in order for me and I slip them into the mixing window.

Me too Bill - I get a lot of stuff from epople that comes in one line at a time, and the first thing i do is dump them all into a single track anyway, to sort them out.

I think it's a right-brain left-brain thing. Some folks are organized and others just let the magic pixies do all the work....

For me personally mixing I've found it easier to have all the lines in one file. That is to say, all of one character's lines in one file. If someone is doing two characters, I'd like two files.

Interestingly, when I do voiceovers for ducats, three takes is usually the magic number. The first is what you think they want, the second is something a bit more on the wild side, and the third is understated. I might do an additional take or two if they've asked to _also_ hear a character voice or accent. Short answer: in this context, I think three takes is fine. (though change it up or recast if you're not getting the reads you need!)
