Default Equipment for new Satellite actor

Hello all.

I'm working on getting the right equipment to record the MP3's for auditions and such. I have the software but am curious as to which relatively inexpensive microphone you all would recommend?

Thanks in advance!

Anna

I'm a big fan of the Snowball mic from Blue. It's a USB mic so it can be used with any computer set-up quickly and easily, and it has a decent quality. You can typically get it anywhere from $80-$100.

I do suggest a pop screen with it.

My favorite piece of equipment is the "podcast factory" by M-audio. It's no longer available, but shows up on ebay from time to time....

I second Crash's vote for a USB microphone. I've heard very high marks for the Samson C01U which is about $100. Sweetwater has it: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/C01UCW

It comes with Cakewalk software which, if all someone's doing is recording lines, outta be plenty.

The Podcast Factory is one step removed from a straight USB - it has a standard mike that plugs into a little unit that makes the sound work for the computer.

See, they show up on ebay pretty often.

I went with an MXL USB Mic - they have both USB and PreAmp Mics.

If you go through Amazon.com you can find some good deals on them. I suggest a USB mic since it's plug and use friendly. If you go with a straight studio mic... then you have to set up a pre-amp and so on to hook into your computer.

I've got a snowball and heartily DO NOT recommend it. The sound quality is horrible.

Really? I love mine. Most of the stuff I send in to the Society as mp3s are recorded on that mic.

I went with a cheaper USB mic -- a Logitech that I picked up for around $40. Although I've heard mixed reviews, I've had no problems with it.

I also use a homemade pop screen -- I think it was UltraRob who showed me how to make one with a bent coat hanger.
