I'm talking here about CBC's 'Nightfall' series from the early 80's. I didn't listen to the series in its original run, but I'm going through them now, having purchased the whole set from one of those MP3 salesman who swears it's legal. That debate aside (please, let's leave that debate aside) I urge all of you to check out this great series of horror and suspense. I just finished an episode called 'Private Collection' that anticipated the pension crunch by nearly 30 years, and managed to make that subject into a fitting horror story. The quality of the show is incredible, though the quality of the recordings sometimes isn't. You can listen to them at archive.org, and allow me to enter a link HERE Thanks, Canada, for some of the best horror ever put to tape. | | | | | | | 05-14-2009 | #2 | | Barbarian in need of Ale Bill Hollweg is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Texas Posts: 11,002 | | Quote: | | | | | I got a spare minute, so I feel the need to praise one of the 'Between' series; those audio theater productions that came between the death of OTR and the birth of podcasting. Fantastic shows!!!!! - another new Fave <from the 80's as well and the CBC I believe> is Vanishing Point <which you can find In Zombie Astronauts realms if ya dig a bit>. | | | | 05-14-2009 | #3 | | The Pulp Reader Shonokin is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 530 | Yeah I like Nightfall quite a bit too. I was pretty surprised to hear a more recent OTR with modern quality recording/effects and storylines that are as you are saying, more of our day. __________________ Shonokin - | | | 05-14-2009 | #4 | | Mysterious! unterhund is offline Join Date: Jan 2009 Posts: 391 | Nightfall is a great series. (Well, except for the horribly slow-moving "A Fall of Moondust.") It runs the horror gamut from suspense thriller to all-out gore. Something for every fan of listening in dark rooms or on late-night back-roads drives. | | | 05-14-2009 | #5 | | Shameless Huckster Icebox is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: International Falls, Minnesota Posts: 608 | | Quote: | | | | | I was pretty surprised to hear a more recent OTR with modern quality recording/effects and storylines that are as you are saying, more of our day. | | | | | I've starting thinking of those groups as 'Monks' - not in the obsessive/compulsive detective sense, but in the ancient holy many, keeping the the light of knowledge alive sense. Firesign Theater, CBS Radio Mystery, NPR Star Wars, Nightfall, these are the groups that kept it alive for the rest of us. | | | 05-15-2009 | #6 | | Moderator Jack J Ward is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia Posts: 1,914 | Wow I forgot all about "Nightfall". Thanks for the links and the reminder Jeffrey! Great stuff! In the good old days, CBC had some really cool stuff. (I miss the good old days). I'm still looking for the original "Booster McCrane PM" if anyone knows where I can find it! The two 3-part miniseries of "A Fall of Moondust" and "The Chrysalids" were not made by the CBC, or for Nightfall. From what I've been able to piece together, when the network had decided to end the show, they opted to save some money by buying two BBC miniseries to air at the end of the show's run. Personally, I don't consider them to be part of the Nightfall series. They weren't even packaged with the show's standard intro and host! :P -N | | | 08-03-2009 | #10 | | Mysterious! unterhund is offline Join Date: Jan 2009 Posts: 391 | Fair point, Neil, and actually pretty obvious in the listening. But it was part of the downloads I got, so I lumped it in there. | | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | | All times are GMT -5.
