I'm with you, Julie!

If they'd offered a $10 a month pay-as-you-go subscription fee I think I might have considered it worth it, but the price they're asking for and the limits on those prices just don't make it worth it.

I respect their needs/desire to cover their costs, but this is a bit much. (Also considering the site is filled with creative commons effects!)

And if they'd stuck to $10 - they would get five times as many subscribers (especially in the current economic times), and make up the difference in bulk!!!

Besides, it's not like they're going to "run out of product" because they have more subscribers....

Am I the only one a bit disgruntled by the change to Soundsnap's policies?

They've gone from \"all free all the time\" to \"five free downloads a month or you have to pay for it\" - $29 a month for 100 downloads.

If they'd gone to $10 a month, I'd be perfectly happy paying (since i believe they deserve something for the work they do), but they really jumped too far. It's better if you buy an annual membership, but who has a huge chunk of change to drop at once?

Thank you for your patience with my venting.

Seconded. I recently had to go looking for some sounds and was greatly dismayed by this change of policy. $10? Sure, I'd have gone in for that. But not $29. Hell, for a little more than $29 I think I can buy my sounds from pay sites and get better quality.

Yes, it's a dishearteningly and prohibitively large leap in price.

But on the forum (before the feedback thread was deleted) it seemed to be that the new focus was very much on selling to independent film-makers, tv pros and so on, rather than to people making free entertainment.

They do have discounted offers for non-profit organisations and teachers, although you need to have official proof that you are a non-profit organisation (I don't quite know how that would work - I assume you'd have to register your audio drama company/production on some kind of official level to get the paperwork?)

Then again, having looked around on other websites listed on stonewashed.net , in fact the number of free creative commons sound sites seems to have grown considerably in the last year or so. Soundsnap was great while it lasted, but there are still a lot of great resources out there.

I was lucky enough to snag bunches of stuff from soundsnap before they changed their policy, and it's great to learn of other sources too, but some effects just HAVE to be recorded by yourself. I've been pretty happy using my Belkin TuneTalk stereo microphone that attaches to an iPod. Not what would be considered hi-def, but also not bad. The older generation iPods would actually record wav files, but these newer ones make m4a files. Thank goodness the beta version of Audacity can open those without having to first convert it in iTunes.

Freesound Project (linked in first post) is just absolutely invaluable. I like to do my own FX work as much as possible, but it's just not practical to do it all.

I'd say about half my library came from there.

Just happened across this site:
http://fxhome.com/sounds

They seem to have a variety of sounds under the nicely liberal CC-BY licence.

Like Bill I have a pile of sound effects I've been putting together for years (about 30 gigs worth). One of my main challenges is massaging the files into a single format, clearly named and in proper folders. Something I hope to complete this summer- along with a number of other things I'd like to accomplish.

(Yeah... a pile of those sound effects I got from Bill too )
