Since Clymangus requested it, I thought I'd start a new thread about places to find Sound Effects for those producers tired of digging through the iLife FX collection library. The Freesound Project has provided most of my productions with key sound effects and occasionally ambient sounds. It's a giant treasure trove with a flawed Search System that requires multiple searches to really get the best stuff out of it, but usually worth it! Soundsnap claims to be a similar site, and I have seen some good FX there, although I'm still not quite sure about whether it's a Creative Commons site or whether all those FX are really user made. The UTEMS collection of random sound effects is free and will be handy for some. PacDV offers a great collection of free Effects as well. Feel free to add to the list! I rush about recording things on my own. | | | 04-11-2008 | #4 | | Audio Fan Aibrean is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Ohio Posts: 49 | Flashkit (and I've used Ljudo.com before) I really like Soundsnap too | | | 04-11-2008 | #5 | | Audio explorer fthrll is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Currently in Oxford, UK Posts: 247 | | Quote: | | | | | Frankly my favourite part of creating audios is making my own sounds so that's never really been an issue for me. And, in fact, is there any particular portable recording device anyone would recommend? Cheers. | | | 04-11-2008 | #6 | | Imagination Lane Audio alexachipman is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Petaluma, CA & Harlech, UK Posts: 1,748 | | Quote: | | | | | Could I ask what you use to do that? I also nick portable recorders from friends and I take a lot of nature inside like branches, pieces of wood, rocks, and create a mini folley studio indoors. | | | 09-09-2008 | #7 | | story junkie finalrune is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 130 | For field recording (on the cheap) I could not more highly recommend the Zoom H2. It's cheap and, in a rare form of truthful marketing, very handy. It has two sets of stereo mics on it, so you can either do a wide pattern to get a soundscape (the ocean, train going by, etc) and a smaller pattern which might be OK for spot FX if you could get in close. If you were really poor, but wanted a really good sounding drama, you could even produce the whole thing with one of these. Drag your crew out to the forest, streets, alley, docks, wherever the thing is meant to be and record using the H2 as if it were the camera lens looking at the scene. I have some beefier gear I use for voice recording for my stuff, but the Zoom has been invaluable for recording podcasts, spot interviews, interesting sounds while in weird places, etc... | | | | 09-09-2008 | #8 | | Imagination Lane Audio alexachipman is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Petaluma, CA & Harlech, UK Posts: 1,748 | I really need to stop writing scenes that involve bringing large bowls of dirt into the studio to record with though. Clean recording, runs on 2 AA batteries, choice of several WAV or MP3 settings, and a couple of handy input and output jacks. I use it for SFX recording, then run a 3.5mm line from the sound board into it to record live shows. And best of all, USB with drag-and-drop uploading. -J | | | | Soundsnap - not so handy any more | | 01-18-2009 | #10 | | 1-Woman Butt-Kicking Army JulieH is offline Join Date: May 2008 Posts: 3,484 | Soundsnap - not so handy any more Am I the only one a bit disgruntled by the change to Soundsnap's policies? They've gone from "all free all the time" to "five free downloads a month or you have to pay for it" - $29 a month for 100 downloads. If they'd gone to $10 a month, I'd be perfectly happy paying (since i believe they deserve something for the work they do), but they really jumped too far. It's better if you buy an annual membership, but who has a huge chunk of change to drop at once? Thank you for your patience with my venting. __________________ --Julie Hoverson 19 Nocturne Boulevard ...and the Deadeye Kid ......and Fatal Girl .........and Tone Didactic ............and Bingo the Birthday Clown | | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | | All times are GMT -5.
