Though I beg pardon for editing for brevity. | Quote: | | | | | A certain number of grants will be given for straight-up political reasons - whose riding are you in and do you fall under certain targets for the organizations. | | | | | Yah, let us not go there in the wake of October. | Quote: | | | | | If you are a performing arts organization whose goal is to promote opportunities for artisits who are (insert any racial or ethnic background other than caucasian).. try and tell me otherwise, I will be forced to slap you silly. | | | | | Agreed on all aspects. | Quote: | | | | | The other way in is the \\\"peer adjudicated\\\" grant. Or as it is known to the great majority on the outside of this club the \\\"you-scrath-my-back-this-year-I'll-scratch-your-back-next-year\\\" grants. I was never part of this club. ... I also don't really care... since many (but not all) people that are getting their funding cut are in a little club that empowers it's \\\"members\\\" by deliberately shutting out outsiders, of which I was always one. | | | | | And that is just not cool. | Quote: | | | | | Remember when I said I would keep this short? Sadly, this is the short version. | | | | | Really? Oh boy. | Quote: | | | | | But those are just frustrations. This is the real kicker: The major impediment to DRT seeking any kind of funding is that there is a very strong trend within both the performance and publishing communities to exclude any web-based content from eligability for funding. ... but there is no more money in the funding pot than there was 10 years ago. Indeed, there is much less. So the only way to protect their own self-interest is to universally declare web-based content as valueless and without merit, ... but you have to sympathise a little. The wolves are at the door for those who toil in the old ways, and they are never going to go away. | | | | | And that's a very good point; money will always be at a premium. In regards to web content being worthless, when looking at a vast majority of it, I would have to agree for the most part though perhaps not in the wording. By majority, I'm referring of course not to anything remotely connected to this board - that's quality content. | Quote: | | | | | A funny story. When we were starting out, I spent a good deal of time walking this road... we fit into no funding model at any agency, in part because no one else was doing what we were. I finally found a program at the Canada Council that seemed to fit... it was for audio creation... a very nice (and I mean that) lady from the Council called up and suggested that I try and \\\"tweak\\\" our application to make it sound more like... how can I put this... something that they would touch with a 10 metre cattle prod. I asked her \\\"True or false. If I were doing an audio installation of bees buzzing in a warehouse space, I could get funding for that.\\\" The answer was true. | | | | | I'd like to say I'm surprised or shocked or something like that. But I'm not. | Quote: | | | | | We are who we are and we do what we do, and there's really no reason to expect someone else to pay us to do what we love... | | | | | And we applaud you for it. I do, at least. I hereby swear that if I win the Super7 tomorrow night, I will sponsor several seasons worth. __________________ Anyone needs me, I'll be in the club car. | | | | 11-13-2008 | #23 | | Audiofile Undrave is offline Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Quebec, Canada Posts: 1,303 | Gregg I think you guys at Decoder Ring Theatre do an AMAZING job, you gives us incredible performance of clever and witty script and you deliver without fail every two weeks. I think its just a shame you don't have all the recognition such work deserves! More than the money any sort of capitalist backing would let us spread the wonders of Decoder Ring Theatre further than the reaches of our current community. It also pains me that much of my personal efforts to spread the love seem to have failed | | | 11-13-2008 | #24 | | Disgruntled Since 1984 Jerm is offline Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Peterborough, Ontario, Canada Posts: 325 | | Quote: | | | | | It also pains me that much of my personal efforts to spread the love seem to have failed | | | | | Same here. Email or write a letter to the editor or to the Style section of the paper and tell them about this '100% Canadian, 100% Clean, 100% Free' undiscovered treasure that's out there that is being IGNORED. Shame them for ignoring their own culture while they promote the latest film from 'down south.' Challenge them to share some FREE entertainment with their readers/listeners. Thanks for letting me rant, Southern Division **I got a high speed internet connection and I'm not afraid to use it. P.S. There's not enough time to re-hash all my phone calls, emails, letters & postcards to your media (& mine too), which have been ignored. I mean, really, what do you think the bumper sticker thing is about? | | | | 11-13-2008 | #26 | | Teacher/Audio Fan bugsy is offline Join Date: Aug 2008 Location: Lakewood Posts: 66 | [QUOTE= I mean, really, what do you think the bumper sticker thing is about?[/QUOTE] I am really looking forward to the day when I am driving down the street sporting my Decoder Ring Bumper sticker and I see a passing car with their own DRT bumper sticker! Get your sticker and go motor. I know that some of the people that I have told about Decoder Ring have enjoyed it, but they have not always converted to downloading podcasts...I find this frustrating. | | | 11-14-2008 | #27 | | Quiet Little Fangirl Zapatos is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Los Angeles, CA Posts: 85 | | Quote: | | | | | I know that some of the people that I have told about Decoder Ring have enjoyed it, but they have not always converted to downloading podcasts...I find this frustrating. | | | | | Tell me about it. I have only one friend who listens to podcasts. He also happens to be my only friend who actively listens to DRT. The two are not uncorrelated, I think. The problem is, if someone isn't iTunes or podcatcher savvy, they have to depend on you to supply the audiodrama fun-times, and if they don't know how to get more, then they just sort of let it go. Highly frustrating. | | | 11-14-2008 | #28 | | Audiofile Gregg is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 1,885 | Ah, my dudes... regardless of individual stats on conversions, if it weren't for that whole missionary zeal that you guys bring to the equation there is no way we'd still be doing this. Seriously, the odds were we'd do one season and say "Well, that was a lot of fun" and that would be that. It's grown because people keep saying "hey... this is fun - listen to this!" | | | 11-14-2008 | #29 | | Giddy Schoolgirl larksilver is offline Join Date: Jun 2008 Location: Arkansas Posts: 126 | There will be cd's this Christmas. Oooohyes, I have my evil plans. Still, I didn't find DRT through a zealot - er, fan. I found DRT through Podiobooks.com. I have a feeling that's how this wonderful thing here is going to grow, mostly: people who are looking for quality content will be drawn to it, and never leave. I believe that doing what you love is its own reward. That said, here's hoping that someday you won't have to split your energy between what you love (and what we love!) and the dreaded Day Job. Let's face it, even a day job which doesn't make one happy is still not a Dream Job. | | | | | living in a resort area, I've come in contact with a few DTR fans by chance. One was sporting a Red Panda t-shirt (which I later discovered to have been counterfeit) (buy only the OFFICIAL Red Panda gear girls and boys) and another spotted my Panda Patrol shirt and we got into a conversation about DTR. I got to feel a bit important then too when I told him that I had been corresponding with Gregg for quite a while and there was a look of awe on his face. I've converted, at least, five other people to DTR too. One of the converts has a good story behind it too. One day, while walking through town, I heard the Black Jack Justice music and then the banter of Jack and Trixie. It was being played on an outside speaker at the chamber of commerce building, one of the workers in there was playing it on her mp3 player for the world to hear, she got the disc from me during the "Fav Five Drive". | | | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | | All times are GMT -5.
