I listen to them too fast. You are not keeping up with my rate of consumption. So, I would love to hear Gregg's and gang's suggestions for other podcasts. | | | | | | 06-27-2008 | #2 | | Audiofile Gregg is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 1,885 | Well, there's a whole boatload of 'em elsewhere on AudioDramaTalk, and I highly recommend starting there. I assume you keep up with Sonic Society, as you should. Some other personal faves from around the board include Texas Radio Theatre (Col. Nickels & Cliff Proton are two TRTC favorites of mine), Icebox Radio is always very reliable and I've been getting really into some KFAT (Kung-Foo Action Theatre) stuff lately. Oh and Pendant, I liked Dixie very much. Mmmm... and find yourself some Martha Manning... that's good times. If you're a heavy consumer (meaning, for example, that a new episode every second Saturday year-round ain't enough for ya...) It's also worthwhile to enjoy some readily available old-time radio programs. Some personal favorites include The Shadow, The Green Hornet, Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe and X-Minus One Ooooh, and Gunsmoke. And Six Shooter. There are some great sets available on Archive.org, I'd be pleased to dig up some links, or search for the "OTTR" sets, which are generally the highest quality recordings you can find there. Also, I've fallen way behind with The Mustache Rangers, but my devotion to their unique brand of complete retardation continues unabated. Give them a try, it's refreshingly like a pre-frontal lobotamy. | | | | | Thanks Gregg | | 06-28-2008 | #3 | | Texas Radio Theatre Co. We really appreciate the mention - Unfortunately we've had to take kind of a summer break from the podcasts while I feverishly work on projects only slightly related to audio drama. Meantime we've got quite a few podcasts on line - but if Flying Monkey has already zipped through all DRT's shows and is chomping at the bit... I sense our current number of offerings is no match for this listeners hunger. | | | 06-28-2008 | #4 | | Audiofile Denis is offline Join Date: Feb 2008 Location: Ottawa, Ontario Posts: 169 | I agree with Gregg. There's a bunch of great shows here on Audio Drama Talk. There's a big list of links to their websites on the left hand side of the main page. Just click away to discover great shows. And the Sonic Society is a great source for hearing samples of shows. I have loss count of how many podcasts/shows I now subscribe to after hearing them on Sonic Society. If anyone is looking at getting more listeners, getting broadcast on Sonic Society seems to work, for me as a listener anyways. My problem now is that I don't have enough time to listen to all the ones I have downloaded. Other than DRT, I really enjoy Prometheus Radio Theatre and their Arbiter Chronicles series, Wormwood, Icebox Theatre, Bells in the Batfry, Texas Radio Theatre and many more. Seems anything with "radio theatre" in the title works for me Denis | | | 06-28-2008 | #5 | | Krale krale is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Boyne City, MI Posts: 662 | | Quote: | | | | | It's also worthwhile to enjoy some readily available old-time radio programs. I'd love to see an current show in the Ellery Queen format. Yeah Richard Diamond was a great show, and you can tell that I listened to the complete run between writing seasons 1 & 2 of Black Jack... things lightened up a lot... I'm not clever enough with actual mysteries to write an Ellery Queen format... I get by on atmosphere and dialouge a lot. But I would sure listen to a show that could! | | | | | | 06-29-2008 | #7 | | Harsh, but fair FlyingMonkey is offline Join Date: Jun 2008 Location: Sunny NW Florida Posts: 7 | | Quote: | | | | | If you're a heavy consumer (meaning, for example, that a new episode every second Saturday year-round ain't enough for ya...)
| | | | | First of all, I should say thank you for the reply and suggestions. I will start checking itunes for them now. As to the quote above, Well... I have a 1.5 hour commute every day. I fill the auditory void that others use music for, with podcasts. It's not as bad as it used to be. When I discovered podcasts, I had a warehouse job. It was boring, and repetitive. Being able to surround myself for the 10+ hours a day with stories was a life saver. I tend to drive a lot (slightly less now, with fuel costs being what they are) on my days off as well, and those hours are whiled away with a wide variety of podcasts. I find myself easily outpacing the output of my "regular" shows and am always looking for new ones. I must say, DRT has taken first place on my favorite podcasts list. All others have been set aside while I "zip through" the archives and most recent show. I have since discovered your Deep Cuts, and enjoyed those as well. I very much enjoy the cast. The stories are entertaining (I am a sci-fi fan, and like the new Deck Gibson shows, but always end up with the feeling something is missing...). I never knew what a fan of detective stories I might be, until I heard your BJJ shows. They are probably my favorite of all the DRT shows I have heard so far. | | | | | | | 07-10-2008 | #8 | | Audio Newbie CJEArkham is offline Join Date: Jun 2008 Location: Marlboro, NJ Posts: 17 | | Quote: | | | | | I have a 1.5 hour commute every day. | | | | | God, you, too? You have my sympathies. As for filling the audient void, try some of these: - The Middlebury Radio Theater of Thrills and Suspense (mrtots.com): college radio actors/writers/directors learning their craft. Both original scripts and re-enactments of Old Time Radio shows. Shows are uneven, but anyone who does an adaptation of "Fin Fang Foom" deserves a hearing, to my mind. I really liked their "Moonraker" adaptation, and they also do comic serials in the Red Panda "Original Universe" vein -- that is to say, over the top.
- BrokenSea Audio Productions (brokensea.com): I looked them up because of their original "Jake Sampson: Monster Hunter" serial, but they also do unauthorized versions of characters such as Doctor Who, Conan, and Jonny Quest.
- Darker Projects (www.darkerprojects.com): I've only listened to "Tales from the Museum", a 6-episode series, but it was good enough to make me want to return in the future for other shows.
- Zoot Radio (zootradio.com): requires a free subscription, but you can download episodes of all kinds of Old Time Radio shows. I've nabbed, for occasional listening, mostly hero shows but also others such as
- Chandu the Magician: 1940's version - former spy goes to Tibet after the war and learns mystic secrets - a kids' serial, with cliff-hangers and teens getting into scrapes from which Chandu has to rescue them - an obvious inspiration for Doctor Strange.
- Blackstone: the stage magician solves short mysteries involving misdirection, then tells the audience how to perform a simple magic trick themselves.
- The Shadow: surely you know who this is...
- The Avenger: a sort of Shadow knock-off, not very good, but passable
- Bob and Ray: old-time favorites of mine
- Superman: slowly working my way through these
- The Green Hornet: crusading publisher fights crime as supposed criminal with mask and gas-gun
- Sam Spade: straight-up detective show - downloaded a bunch when I realized they were the source of the "Purloined Format" but have only listened to one, so far
- Suspense: classic audio drama
- Escape: ditto
- The Black Museum: each week, Orson Welles narrates a tale describing the crime behind an odd souvenir in Scotland Yard's "museum of crime"
- Cavalcade of America: dramatized vignettes from American history
- and many others
- LibriVox (librivox.org): public-domain readings of public-domain works by volunteers. Thus, quality varies widely, but I can recommend the readers Peter Yearsley and Mark Nelson, and if you're interested in the author, you can probably put up with whomever is reading it (though Glen Hallstrom does not, to my mind, have the right voice for reading H. P. Lovecraft).
