Default The Relative Merits of iTunes?

Bill Hollweg and I had a brief exchange over in this thread about iTunes. I don't have any experience with it, myself. I use Linux at home, and iTunes doesn't run on Linux. iTunes doesn't have a very good reputation among Linux and BSD users (including Solaris, I'd think), but I can't speak on it from personal experience.

I was wondering what other producers think of using the iTunes market (is that what they call it?) for distributing their shows? Do you get a lot of downloads/interest from the iTunes end of the Internet, or do your normal RSS feeds and direct download links on your sites give you better results?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Much as I hate downloading through itunes, other people use it, so it's totally worth being available there - just under half my downloads come through itunes. Hope that helps!

Wow, that's a serious statistic! Makes it seem worth the time to set up and maintain. I know that podiobook authors often see iTunes as indispensable, and I'm beginning to think that it is important for AD as well. Thanks Julie!

That all said........ I still despise it...

But that's a personal flavor/feeling on my neandertal self...
Just never liked the interface or much of anything about it from trying it now and again...Course I am a tech noob on many things as well...

Hmmm, interesting. Might be a pain, but likely a pain worth the...uh, pain. Thanks folks!

You know this goes directly into the larger subject of promotions (where, upon reflection, this thread probably should have been started), and the sort of basic steps that we all might want to pursue for our individual projects. Seems like something worthy of a larger discussion, except that I don't have any new ideas to offer. Promotions is a skill that can be learned, though: people get paid to do it for a living, so, at least to a certain extent, it's not some mysterious magical process that only a select few get to learn about.

Again, I say, "Hmmm..."

For ideas for promotions, take a look at all the stuff that We're Alive do - they're constantly seeking ways to get their show (and, as a consequence, internet audio drama as a body of work) into the public eye. And they do it really well.

They find places to get interviewed, make youtube videos of recording sessions, actively pursue a fanbase with their forums.

It makes me exhausted just thinking about it, but I love that they do it, since they are a perfect gateway drug to get people interested in what else might be out here.

I'd say it's a must, it'll be used by pretty much all iOS (Apple) devices including iPods, iPhones and iPads and probably by anyone with a Mac as well.

It doesn't have to be much work though. if you have an RSS feed that's suitable for iTunes, once setup in the iTunes store, you only have to update the feed and it's available to all iTunes users.

There's also a compromise where you replace the http:// part of the link to the RSS feed with itpc:// and hey presto it will automatically add it to iTunes when they click on it. It will not be searchable in the store though.
