Kim Poole (Warp'd Space), Beverly Poole, Shelbi McIntyre and I talk about negative female tropes in fiction. Why? to see how to fix them, to raise awareness, to argue about what "negative" or "feminine" really mean - all of the above.

Mostly, we figure the issue is that if writers don't realize they are propagating negative stereotypes, they can't improve/change/make informed decisions.

This is a three - parter!!! Yes, we can talk a lot!

I apologize for being off mike so bad - my hubris insisted my loud loud voice would carry....

Just to say I really enjoyed this. A very interesting and thought-provoking conversation on tropes. It's quite scary how limiting they can be - and how easy it can be sometimes not to question them while writing because they are so ubiquitous.

Looking forward to the next parts!

Our goal was mainly to raise awareness, and it's great to know that it's coming across that way!

For me it wasn't just about raising awareness for others but in myself as well.
Just haveing the conversation gelled some things for me. That, and it was nice to have that kind of conversation with my daughter. She sure is smart.

Absolutely this, from a listener's viewpoint, too.

It's something that I do try to bear in mind - or I like to think I do, but hearing examples discussed in depth like that kind of gelled things for me, too, and tidied up a lot of previously more abstract reactions into something a lot more organised and thought-out. :-)

out of curiosity would have using a leveler helped with the sound? I know it isn't something we normally use,....

always easier for the listener to turn the volume down, than to have to ear-squint.
