I would likely have never tried producing audio drama if it had not been for Tone Didactic.

For what it's worth, I liked Fear.com when it came out... it wasn't my favorite but it wasn't worth all the hate either.

In regards to The Ring/Ringu... have you ever read the Novel "Ringu" by Koji Suzuki which *all* the movies were based on? (as well as his sequels in the "Ring Trilogy": "Rasen" [Spiral] and "Rūpu" [Loop])

They fill in a lot of info and are in English translations.

Also, if you're interested, I can provide information on Western 'ghosts' that correspond a bit closer to the Asian ghosts you discussed. They've shifted over the years to more "Monster Manual" style mythological beings but originally were conceived as spiritual forces of tragedy that manifest with a physical ontology. Slavic Rusalka are the most obvious but there are some other victims of suicide Scandinavian Seal women (similar to Selkies but a bit more tragic and different and well... dead) as well as the vengeful spirits of aborted/killed infants.

Now that you mention it, the Ban Sidhe and La Llorona also kind of fall in there, don't they?

It all kind of falls under something I've discussed before - the way we deal with scary things, we demonize, humanize, sympathize, and finally satirize them.
