So, I've got a few episodes of a show put together and have a talented friend designing a website. Is there a specific webhost and/or podcast host that you'd recommend using? It seems most folks here are keen on LibSyn. Are there other hosts I should consider? If there's more info you need to know before you can answer this accurately, let me know what it is. Otherwise, I will just blab all kinds of details that may or may not be necessary. | | | | | | 05-18-2008 | #2 | | Kung Fu Action Producer UltraRob is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: London, Ontario, Canada Posts: 837 | Libsyn is what I use and especially recommend to people just starting out for hosting their podcasts because it's so simple and generally reliable. It also has the advantage of offering effectively unlimited bandwidth for a really cheap price, so if your show gets 30 listeners or 30,000 you pay the same amount. With other hosts if you had a sudden spike in listenership for whatever reason (say you got on the front page of digg.com or something) you'd get presented with a bill for the additional bandwidth at the end of the month or you site would just shut down. (Not likely to happen, but $5 a month for a Libsyn basic account is more than worth the price for it!) However, if you plan to put up your own webpage things get a little trickier. Libsyn accounts come with their own blogs built in and I'm not sure how easy they are to change. (I've never really tried.) In my case when I got serious I actually bought 2 hosting setups. 1) A standard basic libsyn account ($5 a month) which is my podcast feed and hosts my podcasts. 2) A Godaddy.com basic hosting account ($3 a month for signing a 2 year contract) that I use for my group website and general hosting purposes unrelated to the podcast. I also have streamed versions of my files available here using the libsyn host feeds so I don't need to host them twice. So for $8 a month (plus domain name registration fees paid up front) I get all the hosting space and versatility I could need. Good luck! I'd recommend what Rob has for just a regular podcast. | | | 05-18-2008 | #4 | | UberGeek MissingIntellect is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Posts: 82 | I use GoDaddy for domain registrations, but I just can't recommend their hosting. (Especially when it involves locking you in with a contract.) I use DreamHost, and I have been very happy with them. I prefer this over a larger company 'cuz he's VERY easy to get ahold of if you have a problem or need something fixed. http://rcysy.com/ Webhosts, I've used Libsyn, Podango and etc. and I like Libsyn the best. | | | 05-18-2008 | #6 | | Audiofile Derek is offline Join Date: Apr 2008 Location: Seattle Posts: 196 | Thanks, everyone. I think Rob's option looks like the one I'll go with, except I may look into Steve's option, DreamHost, to see how it compares with GoDaddy. | Quote: | | | | | I have a $20 a month host but it has several Ts of bandwidth transfer and I utalize the podpress of wordpress. Wordpress is a blog program, right? | | | 05-18-2008 | #7 | | Kung Fu Action Producer UltraRob is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: London, Ontario, Canada Posts: 837 | It means she has a site with a huge amount of bandwidth (T= Terrabyte, which is 1000 Gigabytes) that she uses to host everything. Podpress is a plugin component for the Wordpress blog software that allows you to turn a Blog Feed into a Podcast Feed by adding extra information into the RSS feed that both Blogs and Podcasts use. It's free (like Wordpress) and allows you to attach (usually we use the term "enclose") a sound file to a blog post without it getting all mixed up. A podcast program like iTunes can then strip out the text part and just distribute the sound file without any problems. This gives me a good, but not overwhelming, sense of the various ways these shows can be hosted. | | | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | | All times are GMT -5.
