Default Journey Into Space

Roger Gregg reminded me that...

This saturday's afternoon play on BBC Radio 4 is about JOURNEY INTO SPACE, BBC radio's
smash hit science fiction adventure series from the early 60's.

The programme airs this saturday afternoon 12 April.

JOURNEY INTO SPACE, is the last BBC radio production to achieve
higher audience figures than TV. [The series is available on CD and tape from the BBC.]

Radio Science fiction fans can listen off line at the BBC radio 4 website. The show will be archived on the internet
for a least a week after the broadcast.

I remember hearing that Episode 8 was produced in response to a claim from a television producer that the program's ratings were a fluke, and there wasn't anything that Journey Into Space could do that wouldn't work equally well, or better on TV.

So the 90% of the episode took place in total darkness.

The hatches are closed, and a few minutes into the show - the ship loses power completely - all they have is a single light they must ration for the next half hour.

There's a CD out there somewhere that I listened to a while ago. Great stuff.

From the BBC website:

Quote:
Journey Into Space – Frozen in Time

By Charles Chilton

The crew of 1960's spacecraft Ares awakes from suspended animation in 2013. Jet Morgan – played by David Jacobs from the original cast – has been the only one left awake on the ship for the last 30 years. Unwittingly caught up in seismic deception, it's not only the resolve and lives of the Ares crew which is at stake – the entire future of planet Earth could be in peril.

Captain Jet Morgan ...... David Jacobs
Mitch ...... Michael Beckley
Doc/Ed ...... Alan Marriott
Lemmy ...... Chris Moran
Astrid ...... Emma Fielding
Jensen ...... Stephen Hogan
Radio Operator/Film Voice ...... Kate Harbour

Music by David Chilton; producer/director Nicholas Russell-Pavier.
I haven't really listened to the original series properly (just little bits here and there) - I don't know whether it's accessible to those who don't know the original, but it's being advertised on the radio so hopefully they're aiming for a wide audience.
