A voice from 150 years ago, heard again!

Default A voice from 150 years ago, heard again!

Nearly twenty years before Edison invented the phonograph, a Frenchman named Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville was making recordings of sound in graphic form.

Now one of those tracings has been converted back into sound:

Physicists convert first known sound recording (from the SFGate website)

The story includes pictures of Scott's device and a link to the audio.

Truly remarkable stuff.

Remarkable indeed.
... And this is what happened when the normally serious and cool as a cucumber news reader Charlotte Green attempted to get through the article on BBC radio (which includes the recording)....

Ooh, thanks for the link - I was going to try and find it after hearing the story. Apparently someone whispered that the recording sounded like a 'bee buzzing in a bottle' which cracked her up - I can hear what they meant!
