At first I thought I just wasn't a voice actor. Then I got an earful from our cast while rehearsing the first Afterhell story. Being a room with about 10 actors, making them shout "You don't suck!" was a funny experience in itself. I do filler parts sometimes. My voice is in the Afterhell opening titles, as the warning from the future. I always feel a desire to redo it. [shrug] | | | 03-02-2008 | #13 | | Producer of BBtL! I personally wasn't going to audition for a role in Buffy Between the Lines, but a lot of my listeners (Strangely Literal) emailed me and said I should. Kim, my co-producer, was originally going to audition before she knew I was going to ask her to co-produce. Then both of us auditioned. In the interest of being fair we put our auditions up to a vote along side the other auditions for the same roles. The crew of the production (all of our writers and beta readers) were asked to vote and we were accepted. I can see how people would be annoyed that you're the lead role, we got a couple people who sent us annoyed emails that we were two of the lead roles, but (as my friend Mark said), "is it really THAT surprising that you have the most passion for this project?" | | | 03-02-2008 | #14 | | Kung Fu Action Producer UltraRob is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: London, Ontario, Canada Posts: 837 | | Quote: | | | | I can see how people would be annoyed that you're the lead role, we got a couple people who sent us annoyed emails that we were two of the lead roles, but (as my friend Mark said), "is it really THAT surprising that you have the most passion for this project?" | | | | | Truer words were rarely spoken. If it's going to work you need people with a passion for the project, it's as simple as that. Who usually has more passion than the producers? Leastways that's how it was explained to me. Thanks Tabz... so very nice of you to say! It was a hard thing for me in particular because I really didn't want people to feel like things were rigged (I was handling casting). We got a couple of actors (well one) who refused parts because of it. The good news? It just made it that much easier for us to get rid of the bad attitudes. There were just as many people (more actually) who really supported us in those roles. People who were part of the votes, who honestly believed the best choices were made. | | | 03-03-2008 | #17 | | Lord of Misrule ClymAngus is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: London, England Posts: 114 | To be honest, reviewing this thread I've never seen the problem "blowing your own trumpet" so to speak. If ego gets in the way and the writing goes down hill as a result then people will start voting with their feet. People aren't dumb, they can usually tell the difference between an ego fest and a producer grabbing a main part in order to steer it in the right direction. | | | | | | 03-03-2008 | #18 | | Moderator Jack J Ward is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia Posts: 1,914 | | Quote: | | | | | To be honest, reviewing this thread I've never seen the problem "blowing your own trumpet" so to speak. Criticism is not a bad thing folks. It's how we all get better. The trick is not to wrap your own ego up in what people say. I know for a fact there are shows people will like or dislike that we do. That's not necessarily my problem, that's the nature of the variations of human experience. Now does that mean I should ignore what people say? Absolutely not, I'm fascinated what people like and don't like, and I'm just here to improve either way. So unless its just attempts to personally flame people which is just the only thing I can think of we'd ban as a post, let have 'er... be it tooting your own horn, or muffling the blasts. All the Best! While I've often been tempted to do more acting, I just haven't convinced myself I really have the talent to do it well. Except perhaps in RPG sessions. For "It Was 20 Years Ago Today," I do all the reading, and have actually been pleasantly surprised at how good my voice sounds to me. (After many, many years of hating the sound of my recorded voice.) But that's commentary. Different critter, really. | | | 03-03-2008 | #20 | | Moderator Jack J Ward is offline Join Date: Jan 2008 Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia Posts: 1,914 | | Quote: | | | | | I've chipped in on "Afterhell" productions on several occasions, but only as very small stuff -- demon whispers in the narration, background voices, etc. -- and I am completely content to leave it that way.
